ARTIST OVERALL RATINGS
DESCRIPTION
Jonathan Ansell was brought to us by the first ever series of The X-Factor in the UK in 2004 as part of an operatic vocal troupe G4 (other band members were Ben Thapa, Mike Christie and Matthew Stiff). Jonathan was picked out by the judges as the 'frontman' and Simon Cowell felt compelled to tell Ansell that he was an 'amazing singer' four times in succession. Although Ansell deserves a solo career, his voice is best heard on the G4 albums, as the group emphasised vocal arrangements rather than orchestral, thus Ansell's voice has a lot more clarity on those recordings than on his two major solo albums. He has since parted ways with Universal and is recording an album as an independent artist, having received funding from fans through Pledge Music. Ansell has a very distinctive high tenor voice. His lower range sounds not unlike other tenors, but the upper end of his range is unique and worth a listen. As great as his voice is, his material blends in with the rest of his contemporaries whilst G4 made the effort to be diverse and different. If you like the traditional sort of tenor, go for his solo material, if you are more adventurous, G4 are more likely to satisfy your needs.
