ARTIST OVERALL RATINGS
DESCRIPTION
Rhydian Roberts (stage name, Rhydian) came second on the reality television show X-Factor in 2007 and was given a record contract by Sony BMG. Unfortunately, Rhydian rode the Cowell train, so whatever artistic potential he may have had at this time tended to be wasted. Roberts announced in June that he had left Sony and is currently signed to an independent label which now gives Roberts ample opportunity to express himself. His debut album geared towards pop territory and contained some predictable tracks whilst his second album steadily progressed more towards crossover repertoire. His third album (but his first with his Cone Records), Waves, is out this August and is a concept album on 80's new wave music, leaving crossover music behind but not abandoning his classical training. Rhydian does have a bit of a "rock" image, which gives him some edge that other crossover artists cannot hope to have. His rendition of Meat Loaf's 'Not A Dry Eye in the House' is a particular highlight.
