ARTIST OVERALL RATINGS
DESCRIPTION
Kanon is a unique sounding crossover singer and pianist from Japan. Although classical crossover is very well received over in the East, they rarely have their own artists, and as anyone who listens to Japanese music knows - they have a different sound and possess a specific kind of vocal style. Kanon has a hint of this, and her voice is definitely more fragile than her Western peers, but this is all for the better. The arrangements are also drastically different; making standards like 'Nella Fantasia' sound refreshingly new. Fortunately, she doesn't exploit this much, and tends to write her own music and perform well known Japanese tracks (e.g. 'Wings To Fly'). Her covers are often reinvented; there are sweet and timid rap verses in her rendition of 'I Can't Help Falling in Love', for example and she combines songs together, not forgetting that she (like many Japanese artists) merges the Japanese and English languages together. In short she is versatile, inventive and vibrant. Kanon is not for those that enjoy their arias and operatic vocals, as she avoids both. Importing from Japan can be a very expensive, but fortunately her latest album A New Story (a collaboration with famous Japanese composer Nobuo Uematsu) was released internationally.
